Equipment and Facilities
The primary AppalAIR site is located behind the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center near the highest point on campus (~3500 ft.). It is the only monitoring station east of Illinois that has been invited to collaborate with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) global network of aerosol monitoring stations.
The program has a climate controlled facility housing the research instrumentation and a 30 m flux tower adjacent to the building. In the future, the area around the facility will contain a demonstration garden to show how scientists conduct air pollution effects research on plants, vertically-pointing precipitation radar and other precipitation sensors, a staging area for balloon launches and a pavilion for conducting outdoor educational classes.
